Designed to separate solid waste materials from wastewater, your septic system consists of two components: a septic tank and a drain field. A septic tank is a watertight container made of concrete or polyethylene that allows solid material to sink to the bottom, where anaerobic bacteria begin the breakdown process. The septic tank also contains an upper layer of scum, which includes the fats, oils and grease from kitchen and bath drains. Water flows from your plumbing into the septic tank and out of the bottom through perforations in the concrete or polyethylene walls. This wastewater is then carried to the septic drain field, where it safely soaks into the soil absorption area.

Septic services tanks are buried in the ground and can be made of concrete blocks, precast concrete or reinforced fiberglass. They are usually a little larger than a cesspool and can stand alone or be used in conjunction with a cesspool for enhanced wastewater management.
